Clacton Relatives and Friends

We often have emails requesting information on Relatives and friends in Clacton,
as well as on the Butlins Holiday camps (not just Clacton)
so I have decided to separate the letters columns into different sections.

Robert enquirer@iprimus.com.au I am a desperate man (nice desperate) needing some help. In 1963 I was taken from Clacton on sea as a very young child. (which in turn screwed up my life). I was never allowed to contact any relative’s, my family or friends. I was to young to know their addresses etc anyway. I can remember my uncle’s name, and my nanny’s name and her address is known to me now. She died in the 1980,s I am told. My uncle may still be alive I need some kind person in the UK to look up a Jack & Betty Hagan in the UK phone book etc Can any one please help with this? Warm regards Robert 24 April 2004 Australia
barbara provis leedle@aol.com I hadn't visited this website for more than a year and see a lot of new messages. As I had mentioned before when I left a previous message, my dad was Doug Mason, who was Camp Manager and then Camp Controller during the 1950's. I spent a lot of time at the camp at Clacton and worked there for a couple of years 1958, 1959 and in 1960 we came to Canada to live. My dad passed away in 1988. I worked in allocations with Iris Hayter and we had so many laughs. She was a good friend of mine and we corresponded after I came to Canada until about 1993 when she died. I lost touch with her and she didn't answer my letters so when I came back for a visit in 1994 (after 30 years) I asked her neighbours what had happened. That's when they told me she had died some months previously. If anyone remembers Iris Hayter and her Mum and can let me know when she died and where she is buried, I would like to pay my respects when I come over to England again. I still miss her. She ha! d a great sense of humour and we had a lot of fun together. I have just read the Billy Butlin Story but it doesn't say much about Clacton. My father, Doug Mason, should have written a book about the funny goings-on. He always had a good story to tell and would keep us in stitches recounting some peculiar things that happened on the camp. I have so many good memories of those times and was sad to see the camp closed at Clacton and now a housing estate. 07 Apr 2004 Canada

elizabeth obih eobihf@aol.com This is a lovely website and it brings back many cherished memories of my childhood days in Clacton-on-sea. My sister, Joy, and I were foster kids living with a wonderful, loving couple -- Mr. & Mrs. Bates. I believe we stayed with them till 1963 or '64 when my parents Clara & Collins Obih came for us. I am desperately looking to re-connect with members of the Bates family. If I remember, they might have had a daughter? two sons? and/or two grandsons..? If anyone reads this and recalls two little black girls(in the early 1960s) who lived up the hill and enjoyed camping, playing, and visiting the many seaside gifts Clacton offers, I would love to talk with you. If anyone remembers the specific Bates family we lived with (there are quite a few in the area!), Please contact me with more information as I would love a reunion with them or their extended family. I'm now married with children of my own and live in a suburb of New York, USA, but my family was from Nigeria, ! West Africa. Thanks for your help! Elizabeth 23 March 2004 New York
